"We lost out previously because we weren't so 'bling bling' but now consumers are returning to what is more simple and more discreet," the brand's chief executive told Reuters.
Diamonds are forever
Moving on from all that talk of simplicity and classic lines, there is still plenty for those who like their luxury to be a little more overt.
At Cartier, the dazzle from precious stones adorning its range of 31 jewelry items with hidden watches was almost blinding.
And despite soaring prices for both diamonds and gold, there was no shortage of either in Geneva, with brands saying Asian customers were keen on such pieces.
"We've made a lot of products with diamonds, because the demand is there," said Jean-Marc Pontroue of Roger Dubuis, whose watches start from around 13,000 Swiss francs ($13,440).
Piaget unveiled a one-off version of its Emperador Coussin XL model at the show, the watch's face and strap sparkling with 876 baguette-cut diamonds and 983 brilliant-cut diamonds, and said the piece was more likely to go to an Asian customer, rather than someone in Europe.
Luxury growth was driven predominantly by Asia in 2011, but experts see growth in China slowing this year, and brands were quick to point out they were not just sending everything to Asia.
"We cannot deliver to only one country, we will wait until the end of the week to see who will benefit from our pieces," Girard Perregaux chief executive Stefano Macaluso said.
Although the brands were keen to emphasize they create pieces for a global audience, there was no denying the influence of Asia on many watches at the fair.
Designs in enamel, a technique that has long been popular in China, were on show at Vacheron Constantin and Van Cleef & Arpels, while Cartier also unveiled a watch with an enameled dragon motif in the traditional Chinese colors of red and black.

Finally, for those wanting to get away from it all on their yacht, or for those seeking an unusual work of art for dry land, Montblanc has the answer for 290,000 euros.
The Regulateur Nautique set consists of a chunky free-standing navigational clock, complete with display stand for a matching wristwatch in either red or white gold.
No shrinking violet, the navigational clock weighs 120 kg (265 lb, is 93 cm (37 inches) tall and 56 cm (22 inches) in diameter. It stands on a heavy granite base and the clock itself tilts to keep it stable in rough seas.
The stand also includes a display case for the wristwatch , a safe-haven to secure it in stormy weather, a sentiment many in Europe will surely appreciate.

Found this piece in one of the boxes of watches. It is an interesting piece. I have tried to do some research on its history and so far I have come up with nothing. The movement is an interesting one.

A bit of history on electronic watch, during the late 60s and early 70s, there was the competition on who will come up with an electronic watch first, various watch companies embarked on this and Timex was very active on it. Unfortunately, after much investment and Timex was able to come out with electronic transistor watch first but the Japanese came out with quartz which was smaller, slimmer and lighter and the rest was history.

1960s Seiko Restoration

Found this piece at a flea market, it is a 6309-800LT model. It is not working with battered watch crystal. I have it restored and the second picture is the restored process completed. The watch is working and now I will go back to my boxes of collection to find a stainless steel strap for it.

How to tell the real mccoy of Omega? Some of the indications must be there. Take the example below.

The typical Omega hallmark on the Dial, on the crown, on the movement and also on the inside of the case. The 1940s bootlace strap itself is not original, if yes, the clasps will have the Omega hallmark. Nevertheless, it will be hard to get hold of Vintage straps. So the overall, it is a nice piece of Omega. This piece fetched around US$1000.

See the difference prior and after restoration. I am always asked how much should I pay for restoration. It is a very difficult question to answer, pending on its availability of the parts and the skill of a watchmaker. Unfortunately, both are hard to come by these days. In Singapore, when you approached the retail shops be prepared to pay a few hundreds. It is sad because it basically deters the hobby of watch collecting.

Early 1960s Rolex Tudor with Big Rose Hallmark instead of the Shield

A revisit to a 1960s Tudor and take a look at the inside of the Watch and its exterior design. Tudor is a brand level short of Rolex, like the cheaper cousin of Rolex. Nevertheless, like Rolex Watch, the quality is superior, workmanship and accuracy is never compromise. The initial Tudor watches in the early 1930s has the word "Tudor" on its dial and at times along with "Rolex Watch Co" at the sub sec at six. The small rose design came around in the 1940s as well as the bigger rose hallmark on its dial around 1950s. The Shield hallmark comes around 1970s. Inside of the case of the 1930s models, and not common will have the stamp of RWC. The later models comes with stamp Tudor in the inside or Rolex Oyster Case itself . I remember somewhere in my boxes of watches collections, I have a similar watch which I bought when I was overseas. Finally, I found the same watch. On the inside there is what looks like a battery but it is not a battery. It is a Gold Capacitor and the model is GC 1.8V 0.33F. I put that watch under the Sun and true enough, it started to tick and working fine. I am always amazed with the different kinds and models of watches around the world. I did more research and found out that Seiko did not manage to perfect the technology of Solar watch and Citizen managed to succeed and therefore you now have the Eco-Drive.

WWI Trench Watch and their beginning

Pocketwatches are bulky for soldiers in the field and can limit the soldiers need to access to their watches while their hands were occupied in the trenches. The earlier model of trench watches are modification of pocketwatches with wire lugs wielded around the case to hold the leather straps. The case are usually in gun metal or steel or silver. The dial is usually porcelain.

There are many modern Seiko Watches around in the market but good vintage pieces are hard to come by. I found this piece during my trip to PNG which I bought it from the market place. This piece is unique as it is a case within a case. The era of this watch is 1940. I suspect this piece was taken from some Japanese Soldier during the battle in PNG.

Found this piece on a Vintage Shop, it is a nice marine timekeeper piece or chronometer that is used as a standard portable time to tells its location until the modern era with high tech equipment such as GPS that eventually replaces them.

In Switzerland, only timepieces certified and tested by the COSC and meet certain precision standards may display the word 'Chronometer.'

The brand ZENITH has been around pre-1945 and unlike the many modern brands that are post 1945.

Rolex Submariner was only US$310 in year 1960s

Finally, I have found a receipt of a Rolex Submariner from 1960s along with the watch in an auction house. The value was only US$310 in 1960s and when I attended the auction, the final price for the watch was US$4800 plus 15% premium.

1930s to 1970s Omega Watch Vintage Series

Hi Watch Collectors,

I have gone into my boxes of collection and searched for Omega watches. These watches are not restored yet. I just wanted to show you over the years how Omega has evolved from 1930s Art Deco to the 1970s chunky series.

1930s Art Deco - Case decorated ususally in Solid or Rolled 9K Pink/ Rose gold.

1940s - Design evolved from 1930s retaining the second hand at six.

1950s - A much bigger dial and fancy lugs or fancy dial, this piece has been stored.

Late 1950s to early 1960s - Transition from 1950s to 1960s, Thicker case and Automatic is commonly used. This is a Seamaster.

1960s - Simple Gentleman Wristwatch

1960s - Omeage Seamaster Model

1970s - Omega Seamaster Cosmic, Chunky Solid Case is typical during that era.

This is a sample of my Omega Collections, unforunately, I do not go beyond 1970s. I hope you learn something with Omega evolution.

Abracadabra!!! Another restored 1960s Vintage Gents Wristwatch.

Hi Watch Collectors,

Just got an ordinary piece of 1960s vintage watch back from the retired watchmaker, you can see the magic.

The watch is missing the stem, crown, second hand, scratches on the watch crystal, dirt inside the case and not working at all.

After restoration, you can see the difference.....a clean and working piece. The cost of restoration with a new second hand, a new stem, a new crown, a working cleaned piece of 1960s vintage watch is S$50. Try to get any shops in Singapore to beat that with original swiss parts included.

It has been while, I was busy with my business travel as usual. Just got back, I have found an unusual piece of 1950s Seiko. It is a manual winding watch in stainless steel case.

I also managed to bring back with me a bag full of other watches, I hope I do get time to sort them out and to show them to you. The piece above is US$250. Seiko do come out with special pieces over the past years, you just have to hunt them down......I hope you enjoy hunting rare pieces like I do.

1930s Cushion Face 9K Pink/ Rose Rolled Gold Gents Wristwatch

I should have taken the pictures prior sending in the watches for restoration but I was too eager to get them done. Now, you guys can only see the end results. The watches were in really bad conditions, dirty dial, no crowns, unpolished case, no watch straps and no working. Now, they are fully functioning and accurate time pieces once again. I love those porcelain dial, they last forever, dust and dirt cannot get to them except the hairline cracks.

Unusual Citizen that is worth collecting

It has been hard to find interesting pieces of vintage watches anymore. I guess the supply is diminishing and people are holding onto their vintage pieces. I stumble onto an interesting piece of 1960s Citizen, many watch collectors thought that Seiko and Citizen are solely for uncles only. Here is one that will show you why Citizen is not for uncle only. It is an Alarm watch, if you can get hold of one. Keep it because they are not common.

It has been a while since the last time I put out anything to share. I thought it will be a good idea to go back a bit further, back to the past and look at pocket watches prior to 1900s on its design, construction and materials used.

The winding and the adjustment of the hands are done via the keys.

The multi-hinged case.

A separate housing silver case, you can see the British Hallmark of the case which will indicate the year the case was made.

Nice porcelain Dial with no hairline crack which is rare, usually over the years, you will see hairline crack on these porcelain dial.

The behind of the silver case which minimum wear. How often do you find the modern watches cases that are made from Silver.

This is the part I want to show, the design of the movement, a beauty with craftsmanship.

Ever wonder, why the modern watches do not go that extend in their craftsmanship anymore, let alone the materials they used. The reason is that it make no business sense for the common watches and it will cost them lots of money or investment to make a new model. They do that for their limited edition models and they cost you a premium. So if you ever get a hand on rare or unique pieces of vintage watches, they are good investment.

Circa 1930s Restored Vintage Swiss Gents Watch

Hi Watch Collectors,

It is coming to the end of 2008 and 2009 is just around the corner. The year can change but not the time or the clock, it will still be 24 hours in one day. So you can always use your watch on any year.

I have just collected another piece of a restored piece of Vintage. Here are the pictures of the piece prior to restoration.

Wornout case, usual hairline crack on the porcelain dial, missing second hand at 6, missing crown and stem and not running.

After Restoration................

The case is once again bright and shining. Second hand installed, a same era better condition procelain dial replaced the crack one. A unused rose crown and stem installed.

The behind case had been restored, unfortunately corrosion due to perspiration, that is the best condition we can achieve.

Once again you can see the rose crown, it is not common to see these crowns anymore. I love to buy an unworkable piece of watch and make it work again. The only problem with vintage watches is the difficulty in getting spare parts. The challenge to hunt for the spare parts makes collecting watches much more interesting. You get to see lots of Swiss Watches, Japanese Watches, German, Chinese and Russian watches.....how about the french. I do not have many vintage pieces myself personally. Here is one of them.

This is a 1950s era vintage. Made in France at the bottom of 6. When comes to the french watches, they really put alot of effort in presentation. This is a simple classic 1950s design and yet elegant. Next time round, I will show you a 1930s piece of French vintage and I will show you a few French table clocks as well.

Hi,

I bought the traveller's clock from an antique shop, it was not working so got a discount for it. I sent it for service and it is working now.

The case in solid stainless steel. The dial is porcelain. The leather needs to be mended. It is an interesting piece. Not many 1940s travel clocks around due to the war.

As promised, I have collected the restored piece of 1930s Cushion Rolex Tudor Vintage Watch. The below diagram shows the piece before the restoration. Front case worn, Glass need to change, missing crown and also not moving.

After restoration, Case restored, the Glass changed, a unused 1930s era crown and the watch is ticking now.

This is an circa 1930s Rolex Tudor Cushion face, it is called cushion face because the shape looks like a cushion or sometimes called a pillow case. The case in this case is a 9K Pink/Rose rolled gold. Please observe the numerals and the second hand at six. This is the typical characteristics of 1930s model watches. Some people might think the modern complicated wristwatches' designs are something new. Actually it is not, it is the recycle of old designs. Here is one classic design example of Moonface design, day, date and month. Found this piece from an Antique Shop.

Pocket Watches' case comes in different material for example Solid Gold, Rolled Gold, Silver, Nickel, Stainless Steel and last Gun Metal (Similar to an M16 metal). The Pink/ Rose Gold are the usual in the those era, they come in 18K. 14K, 10K and 9K grade. The 14K and 10K are common in American Market while the 18K and 9K are common to the European Market.

The good, the bad and the ugly of Replica Rolex

As promised, something for you to learn about replicas. In this case Rolex Replicas.

The Good - I meant characteristics of the replica is so close to the real one. In term of weight and exterior features. The technology is so good now that it is hard to tell the difference for the naked eyes. Only when inspecting the movements inside that everything is revealed. Even the good replicas has various price ranges, lower price for china movements and higher price for swiss movements.

They even come with sticker behind, Rolex crown, boxes and papers all sold separately. It is really unbelievable, that is one reason why I do not collect beyond 1965 watches.

The Bad - This is a bad copy of the late 1960s, on exterior, it looks like a genuine vintage rolex but minus the "Swiss Made" on the dial.

The behind has looks normal but the crown is worn out, so cannot determine the authencity and only on inspecting the movement inside, you can find dual movements of swiss roamer watches.

The Ugly - you can tell it is a fake on first sight. The weight is light, the finishes is unprofessional.

The crown is another tell tale sign and once again, the finishes behind is unprofessional.

I do not encourage people for buying fake, it is against any business and ethically is wrong. Why do you buy a genuine watch, you are supporting the business who will continue to research, design and deliver quality products. You feel good in wearing a genuine branded watch because ethically you know you are doing the right thing. It will be embarassing if someone spotted you wearing a fake or even suspecting you wearing a fake. You can resell a real piece and prices will even increase or pawn it if you are short of money. The best reason, you can past it to your next generation as treasure piece of heirloom. Hope you learn something today.

1960s Swiss Gents Watch, Common but yet Rare

Here is a rare find some years ago, on appearance, it looks like a common 1960s Swiss Gents Watch but on looking behind, you realise a serial number D122. This a a military issued watch and SAR signature stands for "Search and Rescue", meaning for the SAR team. So the lesson here is do not write off a common watch.

Here is a piece of 1950s Oris gents swiss watch, I got back from the service of the retired watchmaker. The watch was not moving initially and external condition was shown in the diagram below.

The diagram shown below is after restoration. A picture tells a thousand words and the watch is now keeping its time well. The cost is a fifth of the so called service centres or watch dealers. Some service centres wanted from $200 to $400 dollars to service the watch. Some reasons given by them, no spare part in Singapore, have to order from Switzerland or the watch had to be sent to Switzerland for service. Well, the below is the proof for a job, can be done at a fraction of the cost.

Today, I will show you some of my pocket watches. I have collected hundreds them, over the years and I hope you will learn something from these lots.

The piece shown below is a key winder which is typical of a pocket in the 1900s. This is a solid silver case with British Hallmark of the case.

The piece below is a 9K Rolled Pink Gold Pocket Watch. This watch is typical of the 1910s to 1920s.

The piece below is an Omega Open face Pocket Watch. It is a 1920s era pocket watch in Solid Nickel Case.

The final piece but not the last piece in my collections, is a Waltham Open Pocket Watch in 10K Rolled Pink Gold.

Pocket Watch established the era of 1900s, of cause, there are earlier versions of pocket watch with butterfly balance (beautiful and rare). I only have a couple in the bank vault. Gentlemen used pocket watch during the 1900s up to 1920s and when wristwatch was invented, that spelled the end of pocket watch. The word pocket watch meant the watch was meant to be kept in the pocket. It is held with a chain, the chain can be either solid gold, rolled gold,silver or nickel. The pocket watch case comes in various metal both precious and non-precious. They are in Solid Gold, Silver, Rolled Gold, Nickel and last gun metal. The Solid Gold and Silver are used for formal situation while the nickel and gun metal are for your day to day activities. There are also smaller version of pocket watches for Ladies and their cases are usually more elaborated with designs.

Couple of pieces of 1930s Vintage Swiss Ladies.........

Circa 1930s, Solid Pink Gold with inlay Mother of Pearl with matching Rolled Pink Gold strap. (Rolled Gold meaning two sheets of gold press onto a brass base metal to make it last longer and tougher). Today, you have gold plated which has different thickness of plating.

Circa 1930s, Pink Solid Gold Art Deco, you can see the handcraft design on the case, typical of those Art Deco era. It has a matching pink rolled gold strap.

This is a 1960s reproduction by Bucherer of its 1910s era designs. Unfortunately, these watches are no longer with me but in some collectors' hand. Hope you learn something from this lot.

1910s WWI Solid Silver Wristwatch with Porcelaine Dial

Dear Watch Collectors,

Here is a rare piece of 1910s WWI Solid Silver Wristwatch with Porcelaine Dial.

Typical 1910s wristwatch with the rose crown of a pocket watch, the lugs are wire lugs during those era. The whole case is solid silver and the porcelaine is in good condition wth no hairline crack (rare). Usually, it is common to get hairline cracks on these porcelaine dial. The sweeping second hand is at six.

The behind of the case is in good condition and inside was a rare find. The owner of the watch with photographs of his relatives I guess. This watch is well kept after nearly 100 years old. The watch strap is original as well, from the first day that I bought it

Here is a side picture of the watch with a better view of the pocket watch rose crown.

Finally, it is hard to find a solid silver watch in the current market new model. Even if you can find a new branded silver watch, you still cannot get the hallmark of the case. The hallmark of the silver case are indicators of the silver case maker and the year of the case which was made.

I have found this bag containing a number of Ladies Omega, the first, to be introduce is an 1940s model. It is a solid pink gold, the Omega hallmark has faded. The wired lugs are typical during that era.

These pieces are 1950s Ladies Omega.

The following piece is an Ladies Omega called Ladymatic. It is an automatic lady watch. It is rare to find lady automatic watch.

This is an piece of Ladies Omega, it is called Geneve.

This is another piece called DeVille.

The last piece is an 1970s Geneve Model.

These pieces are as they are. These pieces are not restored yet. Whenever, they are restored I will displayed them. I hope you learn something from this lot.

Early 1950s to Late 1950s design of watches

Here are some samples of the Early 1950s model of watch. The lugs are tear drops in design, pretty typical during that era.

In the late 1950s, you can see the transition of the lugs and the design of the case had changed. The concentration is on the design of the dial, more fanciful and texture.

1960s Rolex Tudor Oyster Prince

Hi Watch Collectors and RWC (Rolex Watch Collectors),

Here is piece of 1960s Tudor (Rolex Oyster Prince) - the symbol is a Flower or Rose, I quite like it. The new symbol for Tudor is a shield.

This piece has been in my collections for nearly over 20 years, I thought of sharing with you watch collectors the inside of such a piece. This piece will be handled to the old retired watchmaker and once the restoration is done, I will show everyone the result. The watch glass has lots of scratches and cracks. It is missing a Rolex Crown and also not working at all.

You can see the above the cracks on the watch glass and the missing of the Rolex Crown.

The earlier Tudor were using the Rolex Case with serial numbers on the side of the case.

The above diagram shows you the inside of the watch. I am amazed, after twenty years, the watch is still in the same condition as the first day I bought it. No rust on the movement or the inside of the case.

There is a hallmark stamp on the inside of the case.
Once this piece has been restored, I will show you the final result. I have faith in the old retired watchmaker.......I am lucky, he does not charge alot, unlike some of the shops but I have to email him all these pictures before he accepts or rejects.

Here is another piece, this time a piece from the 1940s era. It is really rare and lucky to get a nice piece of 1940s watch because of the WWII and if you are a watch collector, you will know many of those watch in those era are either melted down for the metal or the case was in really bad condition. The size of 1940s is usually around 28mm in dial. This one is a military one.

This piece has been restored to its working condition.

Here is another piece of my collection. It is an Omega Stop Watch. I bought it almost 5 years ago, thought of taking it out and educate the watch collectors. You can hang this stop watch around your neck or the back is a watch stand itself, pretty neat. The red backing is made of plastic. The case of the watch is cast iron.

Collecting watch is about fun and buy within a budget. Go hunting around your flea markets and you will never know what you will find. Collect a wide range or specialise in brands, theme, era or whatever fancy you. I collect widely to increase my knowledge but my speciality is watches around pre-1945 watches. I like them because of the workmanship and its simplicity. I am glad to find a good retired watch maker to cater my needs. Find a good, trusted and honest watchmaker who look after you and not just after your money is very important.

1940s German Pocket Watch

This is a typical German made pocket Watch. Made in West Germany to be exact.

There are various brands, like York Level and Coronet that uses this movement from Germany. The cost of the watch can vary from $40 to $70 pending on its condition. I have sold a few to some collectors.

Another day, another piece from my collection. Unforunately, the Balance Staff is broken and I have not got the time to bring it to a watchmaker to fix it. Whenever you got Broken Balance Staff, be prepared to pay a price for fixing it. Always insist on original part.

Here is the watch.

The Operation of the swiss watch:

Two winders, the one on 3, is use for winding the main spring and for adjusting the time. The winder at 10 is used to adjusting the date and adjusting the month on 12. First, you align the day with the date and month. The red hand will move with the hour and minute hands. The red hand is like a day pointer. Once the hour hand reach the 12 midnight, the red hand will point to a new day. I have now seen many branded watches revitalise the old design in their new range of watches. I am sure this design will be copied once again.

1910s rare Silver Case Wristwatch

Here is a rare 1910s Silver Case Wristwatch, apologise but it had been sold, but just for your viewing and education on the characteristics and design of a typical 1910s watches.

Mainly, during that era 1900s, majority of the watches are pocket watches. This is the begining of the conversion of pocket watches into the wristwatch. Typical Numerals during the early era, the most obvious is the crown to wind the watch up. It is a pocket watch crown.

The watch can be opened by unscrewing the top, and the whole movements can be removed easily. You can see the hallmark of the silver case and there is a groove where the stem sits.
The dial is porcelaine and second hand at six.

Monogram decoration on the back of the silver case, usually the initial of the owner.

The Development of Japanese Quartz Watches over the years

Seeing is believing, here you are, I have opened the cases and you can see what is inside of quartz movements from 1970s up to 1990s.

Early 1970s model - you can see the balance staff is still around, only the power by the main spring has changed into battery. That means the power to push the hour hands, the minute hands and second hands are done by the battery.

Late 1970s model, you can see the balance staff had been changed into a stepping motor. If you see the quartz watches, you an see the jerking movements of the second hands.

1980s model - circuit and transistor included and size been reduced to give a slimmer quartz watch in size.

I hope these pictures give the beginner collectors the inside and the development of quartz watches.

I bought these lot of quartz watches over the weekend to look into the inside of these watches. I am just curious. Over this week, I will open the inside and show you the development of these quartz watches over the years. The Japanese is ahead of the quartz movement, before quartz movement, there was the electric movement which if I do get hold of some old TIMEX, you will see the inside. The first three, I need to find out the batteries model because they are missing when I bought them. I was lucky to get last two SEIKOs working again, just by changing their batteries. So the money I spent to get these watches is worth it. Especially, the last two pieces with Roman Numerals are ideal for Gents Office Wear.

Before and After Restoration

This is a 1960s Gents Swiss watch prior to Restoration..........

Issues: Can keep winding non-stop and the second hands are not moving, the watch crystals is in terrible condition.

Issues: The crown is worn out and can be pull out totally......

Here are the results after the restoration...........thank you to that old retired watchmaker....I am impressed with the workmanship and the old genuine unused swiss parts. I know the total job cost more than I have paid for.

Stem...the old one is bend.

Crown...old one being worn

On top of that he included a new black leather strap. Please comment on the results of the OH. I will let the old gentleman know about his workmanship.
